Alrighty folks. Here's your Friday dose of What's Good in the World. And it comes in the form of former Black Eyed Peas frontman, will.i.am. I KNOW, RIGHT? Not that it's surprising that Mr. .am. did something good. Nope. More like it's shocking that I'm so amazingly hip that I know who he is. (The fact that I just used the word "hip" is another indicator of how cool I am. Also how old I am. Though not so old that when I say it I am referencing a certain replacement surgery.)
So, without a natural connection between Mr. .am. and myself, you must be wondering how I came across this bit of news and what that news is. Well, I was watching the Graham Norton Show, as one does, and there were will.i.am and Miriam Margoyles sitting on the couch across from the hi.larious (and occasionally naughty, but I just plug my ears and go "lalalala!") host. Also there was another freakishly tall guy there but I don't know who he was. Although he was funny.
Anyway, will. started talking about this thing called the S.T.E.M. program that he's raised 4 million dollars for and is trying to get into inner city schools all over the U.S., and now in England. S.T.E.M. stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. .i.am. feels that unless these schools really start emphasizing S.T.E.M. courses now, they won't be able to in the future. He particularly feels that girls need to be studying the technologies and math so they can be the future leaders they are built to be. It's actually pretty cool. Miriam Margoyles–whom you've seen in the Harry Potter movie series as the Herbology professor–was hysterical in this episode with will.i.am. Not only was she super excited to be on the show with an actual black man (which she really said, and which he took very graciously and turned into a totally endearing interaction) but she was suitably impressed by his good-deed-doing as well. Check it out:
Right? And you can already see that he and Miriam have got this great and utterly unlikely chemistry together. They should do a sitcom.
Well, there you have it. Good in the world from unexpected places. I love that. I love people. People are cool.
Now you go out there and do some good like Mr. .am. is doing. I'll try it too. Then we can all meet back here and discuss it over biscotti with anise jelly and some herbal tea. Catch ya in a mo.
